Bigbelly Seahorse

Among Australian seahorses, the Bigbelly Seahorse stands out as the biggest. It has a fleshy filament hanging from its head and a triangular coronet that is low and circular over its eyes. In adulthood, a male’s abdomen is more pronouncedly rounded than a female’s, which is more narrow and has a keel along the center.

Each individual has its own unique pattern of virtually white to yellow, reddish, or even brown dots and blotches set off by a widely banded tail. They often attach themselves to sponges and larger algae.
