We categorized the processes of brood pouch formation during male seahorse development into three stages:
(1) The early stage, characterized by formation of a baggy structure from the primordium.
(2) The middle stage, characterized by the differentiation and establishment of brood pouch-specific tissues.
(3) The late stage, characterized by a fully formed pouch with developing blood vessels and a pouch fold ultimately capable of carrying and incubating embryos.
Fry are the name given to newborn seahorses, and they are immediately released into the wild. Two to three weeks of their existence are spent just floating about in the plankton layer of the water. Predators cause a very low adult survival rate (less than one in a thousand).
Tail: The tail of a seahorse may be grasped. In this technique, they are able to cling to eel grass and similar plants and avoid being swept away by powerful currents and waves.
